We in Emden

The port of the City of Emden covers almost the entire city area. It is therefore not surprising that our local office there is the workplace for the largest number of our NPorts colleagues: Some 210 employees and around 20 apprentices. However, we do not all work under one roof, but at different locations.

Close to the city center is the building of the branch office, where employees from many different areas meet (Branch Management, Commercial Affairs, Engineering & Technical, Real Estate, HR & Administration). The large area of Technical Service is located in the Werftstraße. The Port Office colleagues are located directly at the large sea lock. At the South Qay, you’ll find the Emder Kranbetrieb crane operation, and at the North Quay the colleagues of the Rail Control Center and of the Borssum lock. 

Despite the spatial distance - or maybe because of it - we Emden folks like to spend our after-work hours together. Whether you are training together on one of the city's numerous canals in a dragon boat, or on land during a soccer match (sometimes even against our Norden office).

We are also happy to take part in running events together. Last year, for instance, at the Matjes Run in Emden, or at the Vull Wat Manns Loop in the City of Leer.
Every summer there is a Summer Festival and in December there is a big Christmas Party for all.

Our Emden

For many, Emden is "the birthplace of comedian Otto". But there is far more to discover. The 1,200-year history of the city is closely linked to the seaport, and friends of art, culture, and sports are also getting their fill.

Leisure/Culture

You can explore the city from the water side on the numerous canals by canoe or pedal boat ride. In addition, Emden is strikingly green. Aside from the wall that surrounds the entire inner city, there are many other parks and green spaces that invite you to take relaxing walks.

Culturally, the port city also has a lot to offer: Exhibitions, club festivals, flea markets, plays, cabaret, workshops, reading evenings, an international film festival, and concerts of all kinds. The nationally known Kunsthalle, which Henri Nannen gave to his hometown, is always worth a visit. In addition, there are many museums and not to forget "Dat Otto Huus", which is an absolute must for every fan of the comedian/singer Otto Waalkes. 

Do you mind a bit more sea? Then the ferry or a high-speed catamaran can take you to the Island of Borkum. More information for excursions and other activities can be found on the tourism page of the City of Emden.

Education
Emden has a diverse school and educational landscape with various elementary schools, secondary schools, grammar schools, a comprehensive school, and a special support school, plus two vocational schools. You can find out more about this topic on the website of the City of Emden. At the University Emden Leer, students find more than 30 courses of study.  

Transport Connections

Emden is directly connected to the federal freeway A31 (Autobahn), which continues south to the City of Leer. Via the federal freeway A28, you can be in Oldenburg in about an hour. In northerly direction, it takes about 40 minutes to reach the German North Sea coast. Even the distance to the neighboring Netherlands is not too far: In about an hour, for instance, you can visit the port City of Eemshaven.

Emden is very easy to reach by train. Whether Intercity train or Regional Express: Most trains from Norddeich run via Emden to Oldenburg, Bremen, Hannover, Leipzig, Cologne, or Münster.

The Airport of Emden serves all of the East Frisian Islands. The nearest international airport is located on the Dutch side, in Groningen (about 120 km away).
