The Work on Berth 4 in Cuxhaven Has Begun

A big day for the Port of Niedersachsen: with today's greenlight for the excavating works, Secretary of State Daniela Behrens of Niedersachsen's Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Transport has rung in the start of construction for Berth 4 in Cuxhaven. A 240 meter long quay facility is in the planning, providing room for transport vessels with a draft of up to 14.30 meters.

"With the construction of Berth 4 in Cuxhaven, we are setting an important milestone for the development of the Port of Cuxhaven. During the past years, the State has expanded the Port of Cuxhaven to be the leading offshore base port along the German North Sea shore. Siemens establishing themselves here, the construction of the German Offshore Industry Center, and the new berth will fortify Cuxhaven's position even further. The investment of 36 million Euros is money very well spent. The message being broadcast by Cuxhaven is loud and clear: we will show the industry what strong performers the Ports of Niedersachsen really are and that it pays off when you establish your business in Niedersachsen".

Even Holger Banik, Managing Director of the state-owned port company Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG, was optimistic and convinced that he will be able to continue the success story of the port location Cuxhaven. "What we started with the pile mooring berth and the ferry terminal, we are now consistently pursuing." That is why no unnecessary time was wasted after signing the contracts with Cuxport GmbH about the operation of the terminal last February. "We need this berth and we are really stepping it up now." Completion is scheduled for the end of next year. The new quay facility will be connected to the southeastern part of the Multi-Purpose Terminal and it will boast a total length of 240 meters. Adjacent to it, storage and handling options will be developed on an area of about 8.5 hectares.

"There really is no reasonable alternative to the building of Berth 4," Managing Director of Cuxport GmbH, Hans-Peter Zint confirmed. The existing port area has been running at maximum capacity for the past few years. "We and especially our customers have been working near capacity in Cuxhaven for quite some time now and we can only take advantage of the existing growth potential by gradually expanding the cargo handling capacities." His company Cuxport, which already operates a multi-functional handling terminal though Berths 1-3 at the Deepwater Port of Cuxhaven, was therefore very happy to be awarded with the project, which was tendered throughout Europe, Zint highlighted. Cuxport GmbH plans to integrate the new berth into the existing operation and thus continue its tried-and-true multi-purpose strategy of years past.

The building project was also tendered throughout Europe. The project was awarded to a bidding consortium consisting of Messrs. bilfinger Marine & Offshore Systems from Hamburg, Tiefbau Unterweser from Oldenburg, and Nordsee Naßbagger- und Tiefbau GmbH from Bremen. The official structural engineering firm for the construction of this facility will be KSF GmbH & Co. KG from Bremerhaven, soil surveyor and geological and hydrogeological consultants will be Steinfeld und Partner from Hamburg. Any other performances under the tender as well as the construction management will be furnished by Niedersachsen Ports themselves.
