We in Oldenburg

The headquarters of our ports is more or less in the geographical center of the individual port locations of Niedersachsen Ports. Nevertheless, we do not see ourselves as the center of the port world, because the operational port activity does take place in the port locations. Rather, we see ourselves as a meeting place. Colleagues from Norden can meet colleagues from Cuxhaven at this halfway point.

Around 40 people at the head office assemble topics, coordinate questions and design strategies: Goals, tariffs, sustainability, (project) controlling, financial accounting, personnel development, public procurement awarding, construction work testing, compliance, real estate contracts, press work, and much more are processed in Oldenburg for and in collaboration with our ports.

Short distances and good connections – we can also appreciate this when it comes to the location of our work place. The head office at Hindenburgstraße is located near the beautiful pedestrian zone of Oldenburg. The office building consists of three old mansions, that have been converted to form one beautiful office ensemble. Depending on your mood, we spend our lunch together in the so-called social room or, if you prefer a “green lunch break”, in the nearby forest “Eversten Holz”. Those who prefer to spend lunch in a restaurant will find many culinary options in the inner city.

The cohesion among colleagues is clearly visible, especially on birthdays. The brightly decorated office paints an extra bright smile on every birthday child's face. The year begins with a "Matjes & Mett breakfast" from the boss, and ends with a festive Christmas party, which is organized by alternating teams of experts. In between, we always find occasions to get in touch with each other, even outside the work topics.

Our Oldenburg

Oldenburg is one of the four largest cities in Niedersachsen. The northern German city on the River Hunte is also called the Green City or the Bicycle City. And that's no surprise to anyone, after all, there are more bicycles here than residents: 250,000 bicycles were counted, which is 1.5 bikes per capita.

Oldenburg is characterized by a friendly atmosphere, an attractive pedestrian zone, green suburbs, a beautiful castle including a castle garden, the historic Dobbenviertel district, and also by its proximity to the North Sea and the Netherlands. In summer, the Stadtfest (City Festival) is a magnet for the public, and in winter, the Oldenburg Lambertimarkt attracts several hundred thousand visitors. It is considered one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany.

Leisure/Culture

Oldenburg offers a wide range of great opportunities to organize your leisure time: Not only do various museums attract visitors with their exhibitions to the city year-round, but so does the Oldenburg State Theater with its changing schedule, and the beautiful castle garden in the heart of the city.

Throughout the year there are various events for young and old: The Kultursommer (cultural summer) in July, the City Festival in August, or the Kramer Market in October. Oldenburg also has a lot to offer in terms of athletics. The EWE Baskets have been at home in the 1st basketball Bundesliga for years, the handball ladies of the VFL Oldenburg play in the 1st handball Bundesliga, and the Oldenburg Marathon attracts many running friends to prove their running skills from around the city.

In the Olantis you can unwind and relax: In the swimming pool, swimmers can swim their laps, in the sauna and in the wellness area, you can take a break from everyday life.

If you’re looking to take a break from the city flair, you can do that, as well: In addition to many lakes, the green surroundings of Oldenburg are also ideal for discovering the very well-developed bike paths. Along the River Hunte, you can cycle through forests and meadows to the North Sea in a relaxed manner. If you want to get to the sea even faster, you should visit the Bad Zwischenahner Meer, only 18 km away – and it’s worth it!

In Oldenburg, there are currently 15 day-care centers and an after-school care facility. You will find further information on this on the website of the City of Oldenburg.

Education
Around 28,000 students attend the 50 different schools in Oldenburg in almost all the different forms of school. And we have something else to offer in Oldenburg: Instead of individual junior high and secondary schools, you will find the “Oberschule” throughout.

Students at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg have six faculties to choose from, which in turn include numerous institutes of their own. In addition, the Jade University has a location in Oldenburg.

Transport Connections

Oldenburg is conveniently located for transport: The city freeway A28 (Autobahn) connects the individual districts and also runs to Bremen and the Netherlands. The nearest international airport is Bremen and can be reached within less than an hour, regional airports can be found in Hatten and Ganderkesee. And the North Sea (Dangast) is less than 40 km away.

The bus and train station is centrally located behind Oldenburg's city center, and can be reached within 20 minutes by foot from our headquarters. There is even an ICE (Intercity Express train) connection to the south of Germany, all the way down to Munich. However, the fastest way to get around Oldenburg is by bike.
